First blog in the SDL Library Challenge

Even though I have been a librarian for many years, I think the electronic resources assignment will be a challenge for me. Most recently I have worked in school librarian for the last thirteen years. At one high school we did temporarily have access to some of the electronic databases, but the students didn't use them enough to continue the subscription. They were all about jumping on Google to find their answer. I did try to teach them how to narrow down their search perimeters so they didn't get hundred thousands of hits, but they never seemed to listen, perferring to learn things the hard way, or just waste all their time. At the upper elementary level, where I was the last four years, the students had computer classes where they learned to do some basic computer research.

I will be anxious to learn how to use all these electronic resources to help my library patrons.

  1. Hi, Marsha, welcome aboard! We appreciate your efforts to steer students toward good online resources! We hope you'll get more ideas about doing that in our time together.
